For over four decades, Woodard & Company has served as a principled advisor to the capital of individuals, families, and institutions across the Triad and throughout the country, guided by a singular discipline and an unbroken fiduciary standard.
Woodard & Company Asset Management Group, Inc. is an independent and privately owned Registered Investment Advisory firm established in Winston-Salem in 1985. We serve individuals, families, and institutions primarily across the Piedmont Triad, from our home office in Bermuda Run, though our client relationships extend to clients in thirty-two states and, in a handful of cases, in other countries. We are compensated only by our clients, never by commissions, product sales, or third-party incentives.
Here at Woodard & Company we hold our fiduciary responsibility as our most important guiding principle. We define our fiduciary responsibility very simply: we hold the client’s interest first. As fee-only advisors, we have a clear focus and a strong commitment to that responsibility. We seek to eliminate any conflict of interest, and endeavor to do our very best managing each client’s assets.
Our team-based Investment Committee, not any single advisor, makes the decisions that shape each portfolio. The result is a standard of care informed by collective judgment rather than individual ambition, and a practice built to outlast any one generation.
— John B. Woodard, Jr., Founder and President
These are not marketing claims. They are the operating rules by which we have conducted our practice for several decades.
Our compensation arrives from a single source: our clients. We accept no commissions, no trailing fees, no incentive payments from any third party. The alignment of our interests with yours is neither implied nor advertised, it is structural.
Woodard & Company is registered with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. We are legally bound to put the interests of our clients above our own, at all times, in every decision. This is not a brochure commitment, it is the operating standard that governs every account, every allocation, and every conversation.
We believe the quality of the underlying security and the diversification of the portfolio are the cornerstones of sound management. Our framework has not changed in over forty years, because the principles that govern sound investing do not change.

Learn More →Tactical Asset Allocation is our primary management style for clients seeking a diversified, multi-asset portfolio. We construct each portfolio across stocks, bonds, and other asset classes, then adjust the mix as market conditions, valuations, and economic data evolve. The framework is active by design, disciplined by process, and built around what the client is actually trying to accomplish.
Allocations are not static. Positions are reviewed continuously by the Investment Committee, with changes made in response to material developments in the underlying fundamentals, not in response to short-term volatility. The objective is consistent: a portfolio appropriate for the client’s objectives, with appropriate risk for the prevailing environment.
The Market Leaders Portfolio invests in approximately twenty to fifty companies that represent the primary leaders, or emerging leaders, of their industry groups. Predominantly large-cap equity, generally sector-neutral to the S&P 500, with an emphasis on long-term holding periods and the minimization of taxable events.
Positions are continuously monitored and evaluated against fundamental measures, management quality, and broader market context. Changes are made when compelling fundamental factors emerge, not in response to transient noise or the day’s headlines.
We have assembled a multidisciplinary team of professionals who apply a consistent and cohesive strategy to the management of our clients’ assets.
Hosted by John Woodard III with his father, John B. Woodard, Jr., as the frequent featured guest, The Generational Investors brings the weekly discussions of a nearly fifty-year investment practice to a broader audience. New episodes explore market structure, economic history, portfolio philosophy, and the habits that separate enduring investors from transient ones.
Woodard & Company was founded in May of 1985 in the upstairs of the restored Reynolds farm “Cow Barn” in Reynolda Village, Winston-Salem. From those modest beginnings, the firm has grown into one of North Carolina’s larger established independent Registered Investment Advisors, without ever compromising the principles on which it was founded.
